The Problem

In rural Tanzania, plastic waste is a major issue — bags and bottles clog rivers, pollute the land, and release toxic fumes when burned. This creates serious environmental and community health harm. Without infrastructure for collection or recycling, communities have few options to address the growing crisis.

Turning Plastic Waste into Opportunity

Our team currently collects approximately 800 kilograms of plastic monthly, sending it to a recycling facility in Moshi. Community members receive payment for bringing plastic to Age Watch Tanzania, creating both an environmental benefit and an income opportunity.

Four young men are currently employed for plastic collection across nearby villages. As the programme grows, we aim to employ more community members and expand our reach.

We are seeking funding for a plastic-chopping machine to reduce transportation costs and improve the efficiency of our recycling operation.

Inspiring Change Through Education

Beyond collection, we use school lectures and interactive activities to teach children and communities about environmental protection. Our educational approach uses a powerful metaphor: “the forest sings songs” — illustrating how tree removal silences forests while replanting restores nature's song.

Currently we operate in one school, with expansion plans to all 10 local primary schools. This requires additional funding and volunteer support.
